Imagine a situation where your CPU limits the improvement in frames per second, keeping you at 80fps even when using higher resolutions like 1440p with your 3060ti.

Above my head I enjoy various titles such as Path of Exile, Diablo Last Epoch, Hunter Call of Wild Monster Hunter, Souls Games, Borderlands, Remnant 2, Warhammer, Darktide, 40k, Space Marine, Destiny 2, Helldivers 2, Planet Zoo. These are just a few examples. As you can see, I don’t often play "CPU intensive" games.

Consider upgrading to a 14400F and using an RTX 5070 GPU, since this fits within your budget.

We haven't played similar titles, but I have the benchmark data for MH Wilds from earlier tests. I tested it on my machine using 7800X3D with SMT off (8 cores, 8 threads) and a default 5070 Ti at 1440p Ultra settings. I made a few adjustments: turned off frame generation and DLSS. Monitoring CPU/GPU usage showed high CPU load in some areas—around 80%—meaning the CPU could be limited there. In open-world zones it stayed under 60%, giving ample headroom. I had disabled SMT before and never tried re-enabling it. I also attempted to disable more CPU cores for testing, but the system wouldn't boot. Overall, the performance gap between single-threaded versions (4.4 GHz vs 4.7 GHz turbo) seems minor compared to the architecture.

Considering the upgrades, a 14400f with RTX 5070 would likely be more beneficial than just moving to a 5070ti/9070xt with your current 12400f.

14400f essentially represents a severely limited 12600k, yet in the US it seems used Intel chips like the 13600ks are reasonably priced. Upgrading to something like the Am5 Ngl 5070ti works fine, and tweaking the BIOS to bump the clock speed a bit can help. Just keep in mind that the actual BCLK isn’t changing—it might be listed as PCIe frequency. This only affects the CPU and RAM, so you’ll notice it during boot after removing the NVMe drive. Save some money by reselling that 12400f combo for around $150, then upgrade to a better platform nearby. The 7600x3d and 265k bundle is a solid choice, though you’ll have to decide between a future-proof setup and a faster CPU that needs careful tuning. Multicore performance will still dominate the 7600x3d, but memory latency issues may hurt gaming speed unless you optimize it.

I'm based in South Africa. Things move slowly and options are limited. Prices feel off—9070 isn't that much cheaper than 9070x, and the 5070ti is priced similarly to a 9070xt. The 5070 with 12GB RAM seems the best deal if it works well with my 12400f, though I'm not sure about that.

To assess your CPU limitations, reduce the game resolution and mimic the GPU performance you'd get with a 5070 Ti. An RTX 3060 Ti at 720p will closely resemble the output of a 5070 Ti at 1440p. If your system hits CPU constraints at 720p, you can determine the likely maximum performance you'll encounter.

For games requiring more than 12GB of VRAM, upgrading to an RTX 5060 Ti with 16GB could boost performance. Moving data between VRAM and RAM demands significant processing power and may cause CPU limitations!
