I'm gradually becoming familiar with 10gb networking at home. I have a mix of 10gbe cards, SFP+ ports on servers and network equipment, plus some SFP+ transceivers. Mostly I'm curious about whether a 16-port switch that only supports SFP+ makes sense, and another switch in my garage that also works with SFP+—what’s the point of switching to fiber here? When should fiber be considered better than Cat6a?

I usually opt for fiber over 10gb-base wherever possible. It’s more affordable, offers better latency, and consumes less power. There’s no good reason not to. You’ll find affordable SFP+ routers such as MikroTik models that fit the bill.
