I've been searching for a new CPU for some time and, like many, I was expecting AMD's 5th generation Ryzen chips – especially the 5800X and 5900X. I currently have a X570 board and a Ryzen 2700, so I'm eager to upgrade soon. However, given the present circumstances, I'm questioning whether it's worthwhile. Here are a few thoughts that crossed my mind when I noticed Intel's chips being significantly cheaper than AMD's options. I own 64GB of G.Skill Aegis 3000Mhz RAM, but compatibility issues mean it only operates at 2800Mhz. With a new Ryzen processor, I'd likely need a faster model to fully utilize its capabilities. Does this still seem irrelevant for an Intel 10700K or 10900K, as it was before? With a 6700K, I'd probably need to replace the motherboard, but since I might not require new RAM, the expense would likely stay similar. 64GB of DDR4 RAM would cost at least 200€, which is sufficient for a decent board. That depends on whether part one holds true – both sockets are nearing the end of their lifespan. Intel's 1200 series is clearly their current focus, and AMD seems to have confirmed the Ryzen 5000 line is the last AM4 platform. So, if I ever upgrade again, I won't benefit from skipping a new board like I did with my previous setup. (Even though I bought a new one, I guess I'm always spending money.) Cooling – My current setup uses a Noctua NH-D15, which should suffice. I plan to upgrade to a Noctua NH-U9S eventually so it fits in a 4U case. Of course, I could wait… but I can't. I really need a new CPU now! So here are the approximate prices: 5800X around 600€ (possibly dropping to 500 if lucky), 5900X about 900€ (maybe 700 if lucky), 10700K ~ 360€, 10900K ~ 560€.
the 5800x is just straight up better than a 10900k, even if you didn't have to get a new motherboard there really isn't any savings.
It seems a gn video mentioned something, but on the latest version it might reduce frame rate.
3000MHz is fine for Comet Lake-S or Zen 3. Upgrading to a 64GB kit would likely provide more value than the higher cost, especially for typical workloads. I recommend 3000MHz because a superior memory controller could make a difference. Choosing Intel isn't necessarily the best move here, given you already have an X570 board. Although prices are high, it's unclear if extra cores like the 5900X would help, as you haven't specified your tasks. All units should handle cooling with a U9S, but overclocking with a 10900K won't be easy. The 10700K is expected to perform best, though only slightly.
Based on your usage and timing needs, staying on the 570 with AMD makes sense. Once you get that motherboard, any future upgrades will require a new board. The 5800X and 10900K are quite close in price if you find them, offering strong value. With the roadmap pointing to Zen 4 and a 5nm process, it seems this will likely be the final AM4 generation.
